- Nicole Hyala & Chris Tsuper

Nicole Hyala and Chris Tsuper has been the domestic vocal personality of whomever owns a frequency modulated radio piece at home or on-board. Their laudable wacky and comical vocal thunder dangle miles and miles as far as the eyes can see, the ears can hear up to the last drop of radio wave their mighty transmitter can reach.

They're the prince and princess of the Philippine local air wave supremacy. Few contemporaries wowed and vowed to these comical radio tango, virtually muting some others jiving in to the same airtime slot that they have.

The duo gives new drama to what mode of listening FM radio fans do. Cause every time you hit a radio tuner you'd expect to hear music after music of whatever genre, but listening to these radio superlatives would definitely loosen up your auditory monotony and give way to a new definition of your listening pleasure.

Nowadays it taxes your pocket to get entertained, shake few anxieties and kick ass with your emotional hang-ups. You'd go to clubs, comedy bars or pop few pirated comedy disc to your DVD set just to beg few drops of guffaws to yourself. Fortunately, Nicole and Chris are vying one of the cheapest entertainment portals in town – the radio air waves. They're free as the air but with uncompromising entertaining prowess as any highly paid comedy front acts that we have. Just Nicole's signature laugh jeopardizes whatever impending lousy feel the day confronts you. And with Chris's regular butt-ins to Nicole's sizzling mouthpiece guarantees either you'd go nuts yourself or laugh out loud.

The gags the two of them exude from the receiver all throughout the baffles of your radio stereo undeniably sizzles your butt out of your bed early in the morning – blame it to your neighbor's fanatism. They're perfectly the caffeine content on the driver's sit and the travelers burning wheels especially taxis, jeepneys and tricycles.

On our way meeting them, as everybody would expect, we’ll not miss this day and the venue without hearing Nicole triumphantly herald her jaw-numbing LOL as in laugh out loud and Chris’s unassuming and always affirming baritone second the motion voice to Nicole.

It did made the day!

Nicole and Chris scrapes living over a humble beginning, not even intending to be who they are now, by just being simple radio personalities. But with the said “chemistry” the two of them holds lengthens the wool of the entertainment duo for some sort of eight years now. Fate works out for them by just intending to serve people by the power they've know God has given them. It's been years of toil and turmoil before they finally shovel the hefty piles the entertainment giants offer them. They're not to choose between the good and the better – they're to choose between the best and the best only.

Call them wacky, call them crazy, call them jerky loudmouths of the FM band but most of us have to admit that they've tickled our funny bones for quite some time now. They're making the most out of what we're calling them and it bounces back to them as stereotyping titles as “Tambalang Balahura at Balasubas.” It went a long time hobnobbing FM radios before it finds acceptance to our moral sensitivity; till the negative whip of the title is as funny as sniffing a laughing gas. The “Tambalan” spawns more sibling words with gay twists such as “nakakalurkei,” “trolalou,” “eclavou,” etc.

The effort and the said chemistry are still paying them back outpouring amount blessings from left to right. By just doing their jobs in 2008, Ivory Records tease them with a brand new album they suspected as funny hoax from the company since they’re not singers. But then the company take them seriously and give them a shot.

“'Yung totoo, honestly, we didn't choose this field. This field chose us, we had no intention from the very beginning from the start of our broadcasting career to have an album but it was an opportunity given to us by Ivory Music.

Tinawanan lang naming,” Chris on his side.

Despite not being singer naturally they’ve mange to come up with an album seasoned of course with the very flavor listeners got to love them – the funny adlibs and veritable catchphrases.

“ 'Yung album naman namin is a combination of songs and adlibs. So even if we sing there, hindi pa rin nawawala 'yung pinaka basic touch ng tambalan which is how we talk on air,” said Nicole. Chris on the other hand, “ibig sabihin maliban sa mga songs na meron sa album, kung papaano kami napapakinggan sa radyo ng mga listeners namin meron din sa CD.”

It is hard for Nicole and Chris to reconcile their fortunate fate though it seems obvious. Nicole can only mumble her real name as Emmy Tiñana and her partner. Even the high-hitting “Mahal Kita Kasi” song by the two of them cannot surmise the fact and the amount of fact that they are more DJs than singers, yet contributed to the cult following as Nicole said, “I don't think it will create such a great as to I am Nicole Hyala and he is Chris Tsuper kasi una may mga cult following, may mga sumusunod na talaga sa amin.

Thinking of how did they become so successful with the lasting untiring partnership – here’s a tip from the tips of their fingers, “Chemistry! 'Yun lang wala ng iba,” exclaims Nicole. Even Chris is mesmerized, “inexplicable chemistry kahit kasi kami hindi namin maipaliwanag. Ano bang meron tayo at bakit pumapatok. Bakit kami nagkakaintindihan.”

Nicole concludes our interviewer’s inquisition with, “gan'un talaga kapag may sapi may sayad pinagsama eh di pandemonium – kaguluhan. Chemistry. You can put two very good Djs together but if they don't blend with each other it will not work. So kami lagi nga naming sinasabi na 'ito ang tambalang pilit ginagaya pero hindi makuha ang timpla.' kasi iyon 'yung inexplicable chemistry,” – followed by a boisterous signature laughter of her that reverberated the entire vicinity of the photo studio.

Chris recaps and put the best forward, “kayo ang makapagpapatunay ang daming nagiging tambalan. Hindi sila nagiging kapatok kagaya tambalang balasubas at balahura because of chemistry.”

MORE FAN FUN BYTES

How was “Tambalang Balasubas and Balahura” created?

Nicole: Unplanned and by accident. Si Chris Tsuper has his own solo program from 5 PM to 8 PM. D'un sa solo program niya, since its drive time, kailangan magkaroon ng traffic reporter na girl. So n'ung time ni Chris Tsuper nagre-report ako during his slot ng traffic sa EDSA ganyan...ganyan so it went on as an ordinary traffic report until one day sabi ko 'ano ba yan nakaka-tumbling ang traffic sa EDSA' tapos sabay kaming tumawa – parang natawa talaga kami. 'Yung laugh namin it felt good n'ung sabay kaming tumawa. It felt really good na sabi namin 'we have to repeat this' or we have to you know habaan natin 'yung ano natin hanggang sa the next day nagkaroon kami ng konting kwentuhan.

Chris: Kumbaga from a very small topic naging isang segment na siya. Si “balahura” ginawan ng partner si “balasubas” pero we are not promoting the negative...

Nicole: aspect of it but on the positive note like “Balasubas and Balahura” in terms of witty, makulit , kalog.

Nicole: Since sabay kaming tumawa, we get to finish each other's sentences hanggang sa sinabi nang management namin na 'Oh sige na nga since mukhang effective itong ginagawa n'yo na kayo lang ang nag-isip. Let's make it a full blown program.'

Any inspiration or driving force? Who are your musical heroes? Who have influenced you to have a career in radio?

Nicole: Walang maisip (laughs). Halatang walang musical heroes, walang musical inclination. (both laughs). Nakakaloka!

Chris: Kapag kasi sinabi mong idol mo si Michael Jackson, 'yung type of music ipa-pattern mo kay Michael Jackson tapos since idol mo siya pati outfit gagayahin mo pero sa amin kasi walang gan'un.

Nicole: Oo wala. I mean we acknowledge that there are a lot of great singers pero wala kaming kailangan nating gayahin si Beyonce or whatever or kung sinuman.

Chris: We are on our own character.

Nicole: 'Yun 'yung pagiging recording artist namin. Tama si Chris. It's a character.

Differentiate being a DJ from being a recording artist. What are the pros and cons?

Nicole: S'yempre being a DJ it's already a part of ourselves. It's like breathing para lang siyang panghinga. Normal na normal at kayang-kaya naming gawin kahit nakapikit, tulog, nakabaliktad pag-DJyen mo kami kaya namin siyang gawin. 'Yung pagiging recording artist...

Nicole: Although medyo mahirap lang sa part namin kasi ang kinakanta lang namin talaga are the songs from our album so kapag halimbawa ininvite kami to do a cover of something hindi namin nagagawa iyon. (smiles) Again as being recording artists is a character. It's something that we just play with.

Nicole: It creates a certain mystery ba. Ano kayang itsura n'ya?

Chris: Ay'un kapag may album ka you have no choice but...

Nicole: to show yourself to other people. You have mall shows ganyan ganyan...

Chris: kailangan mo ng exposure.

Nicole: But don't get us wrong talagang nag-enjoy rin naman kami.

Nicole: And these are three albums which are selling and these are albums na napupuno ang mall shows.

Chris: Korek! As in pinagmamalaki ng “tambalan” 'yun na kapag meron kaming mall shows napupuno talaga siya. Hundreds of CDs ang nabebenta namin per mall show.

Madami na kaming nakitang mga pirated copies ng album namin all three of them.

Who came up your radio monikers, Nicole Hyala and Chris Tsuper?

Nicole: Management po. Nicole Hyala from kolehiyala kasi maingay, magulo, makulit, malandi gan'un.

Ako I cater to the drivers. Nicole Hyala for the students. Meron pa kaming mga ibang Djs Papa Jack for the padyaks (pedicabs). Rico Panyero for the corporate people mga gan'un. Sectoral na playful.

What made you want to be disc jockeys?

I was a graduate of Business Management from Assumption so malayong – malayo but because of a broken heart it lead me to look for another field of endeavor. But it's actually that kung papaano ako napunta sa field na ito lagi kong sinasabi 'yung personal aspect of it I got broken hearted and I needed to look for another career to help me move on.

As DJs, both of you become famous for your unique and exciting phrases that you invent, such as “nakakalurkei” and “trulaloo at walang halong eclavou” among others. Where's your humor coming from? Are your punch lines on your radio program scripted or it just naturally comes out?

Nicole: It comes out naturally.

Chris: Its spontaneous. What's happening on air talagang lahat 'yun hindi namin plinano. Once we turn on the microphone start na talaga 'yun. Everything is spontaneous. Whatever comes out on our mouth 'yun na 'yun. Everything is natural.

Nicole: Since it's natural lahat. Walang script mas maraming nakakarelate kasi para lang kaming nagkwe-kwentuhan eh parang isang buong barkadang nakikinig sa isa't-isa may inuman gan'un.

Out of curiosity, where did your famous Tambalan life-affirming saying “Una magdasal ka para mabuhay ka, pangalawa mag-toothbrush ka para mabuhay ang iba!” came from? Who thought of that?

Chris: Malaki at mataas 'yung naging recall n'yan.

Your program “Tambalan” on the radio is always happy, fun and spontaneous, how do you deal with bad days and bad moods?

Nagmilenyo, Ondoy deadma lang 'yan to the world. There are moments na minsan na naiiyak ka sa programa mo. Sa tambalan kasi its already a part of your life and 'yung mga tambalanistas, listening to tambalan is already a part of their lives already.

Kahit na broken hearted ka wala namang pakialam si manong driver kung broken hearted ka so the show must go on. This still is a job and we get paid for it and we have to it.

Chris: Trabaho lang walang personalan.

Nicole: Pero s'yempre ako minsan lumalabas naiiyak ako.

Chris: It's part of being natural.

Nicole: Ang dami naming napapa-iyak kapag naiiyak ako.

How do your fans call themselves?

Nicole: Tambalanista

Chris: Mga adik sa tambalan.

Since you entered the music industry in 2008, how many albums did you have? Do you write your own songs? Who is the major songwriter?

Chris: Tatlo.

Nicole: Iba-iba kasi eh all three albums iba-iba 'yung composers and arrangers pero wala kaming sinulat.

Differentiate your first album Hey! Tambalan Na! D’ Nakakalurkei Na Album from the second Hey! Tambalan Na! D’ Mas Nakakalurkei Na Album to your current album Hey! Tambalan Na! D’ Pinaka-Nakakalurkei Na Album?

Chris: First album medyo mahirap pa kasi d'un mukha pa kaming taghirap that time.

Nicole: Seriously, 'yung picture namin d'un wala kaming photographer. Pumunta lang kami sa isang studio. 'Oh papicture kami ganyan'. Nag-ambagan pa kami ng tig P300.00. (both laughs) Naku! Mahal magparecopy h'wag na nakakaloka!! (laughs)

(both laughs)

Nicole: So P300 nanaman gan'un.

Chris: Kaya kapag tinignan mo 'yun mukha talaga kaming mahirap kasi ang itim-itim namin d'un. (both laughs) Wala kasi kaming budget n'un eh P300 lang pera namin n'un. (both laughs)

(laughs)

Chris: Walang make-up make-up 'yun as in talagang 5 mega pixel lang na digital camera.

Nakakaloka. Pero parang feeling ko in terms of adlibs 'yung first album para sa akin ang pinaka-nakakatawa kasi...

Chris: Excited pa kami that time kasi first album. Na kailangan galingan natin. Na kailangan gandahan natin. And 'yung mga adlib na nad'un the best of tambalan talaga. Unlike the...

Nicole: The second and third albums nirecord na namin siya. Hindi siya file kasi hindi siya live. Alam mo it's really different when it's recorded and when it's live.

Nicole: So 'pag dating ng third medyo pinaka. (laughs) Pero 'yung second and third albums naman magaganda rin 'yung adlibs. In fact bawat album kasi may distinctive siyang adlibs eh like 'yung first tambalagtasan – mga nakakatawang words like utong, tampipi.

Chris: Kumbaga may special features.

Nicole: 'Yung second naman is Dear Nicole and Chris parang advice. May drama at kabaklaan.

Chris: More on gay lingo and may mga jokes kami at salawikain.

How will you classify your music? How would you want people to know you?

Nicole: Hindi ko alam iyong sagot. Siguro Novelty siya.

Chris: Bahala sila. For some award giving bodies for us to be recognize na talagang recording artists kami. Siguro novelty kasi iyon 'yung category namin kapag nanonominate kami sa music awards.

Nicole: Dalawang nominations na sa Star Awards for Music and Awit Awards.

Please tell us something about your latest album, Hey! Tambalan Na! D’ Pinaka-Nakakalurkei Na Album, What impressions that you'd like people to take away from your songs?

Chris: Mahal Kita Kasi is very patok.

Nicole: Well, 'yung recall n'ung mga kanta. Minsan nga eh yung kantang kase...kase 'yung kinakanta ng anak kong two years old gan'un s'ya eh.

Mahal Kita Kasi fan mad video has reached over 1 million views on YouTube, what can you say about that?

Nicole: It was fan made by a fan in Baguio. I'm so flattered.

What is the lesson you learned from the music industry so far?

Chris: Alagaan ang boses.

Nicole: Korek!! Kasi mahirap magrecord.

Chris: Kailangan naming matutong sumayaw.

Nicole: It's part of the package na marunong ka na ring sumayaw.

Chris: Parang kumakanta raw yang dalawang yan kunin nga natin.

Chris: So malaki ang naitulong kapag kinukuha kami as hosts.

Nicole: Nakakadagdag ng TF.

Since your tandem became household names, is there anything you want to do differently in your career aside form being disc jockeys to being endorsers? We've heard you have a TV offer? Can you tell us something about that?

Chris: Stressful!

Nicole: The TV offer was a stressful one and a half months of huggling and reflection and I don't know na-pressure kami. Sobrang stress siya kasi s'yempre it's an opportunity that is given not to alot of people parang many has aspired but only few are chosen di ba.

Chris: ABS-CBN as in napaka-ganda ng offer nila. Sobra! 'Pag inoffer sa'yo 'yun talagang kahit sinong tao mahirap tanggihan iyon. Very irresistable.

Nicole: It was a multimedia offer not just TV it's also radio and recording for Star Records.

Chris: Napaka ganda ng offer nila pero hindi namin kinuha kasi mahal namin 'yung radyo and d'un kami nakilala eh as Djs.

Nicole: Kasi ABS they value their synergy na dapat they support each other na kapag may TV sila suportahan ang radyo na kapag may radyo suportahan ang TV. So they can't take a radio DJ from another radio station to host in their TV shows kasi we also understand that it would be a unfair to the Djs in their radio stations.

We will be nobody 'pag lipat namin d'un.

Nicole: We will start again from scratch. And at 30 years old you will start again from scratch? Although on the other hand, even if we don't use the same name, we will still have the same laughter, the same humor and wit and style kaya lang s'yempre start all over again 'yun.

Nicole: Grabe alam mo hindi ko makakalimutan 'yung moment na kaming dalawa ni Chris Cahilig lumabas sa opisina ni Charo Santos na head up high because we actually said no to a multimedia offer. DJ Chris: Hundreds of thousands ang sweldo monthly.

Nicole: No talaga! As in six digits na sweldo in a month. Like nga 'yung sinabi ko 'yung pinakarason why I didn't take it is that there are more important things in life than fame and money like family and I just got married. It is my duty and I would love to serve and be with my husband the whole time parang hindi ito 'yung perfect time since we're trying to establish a good marriage pa lang.

Nicole: We are celebrities in our own rights.

May isang bagay akong natutunan d'yan. Life is not about money and fame. But we are super thankful for the offer. Sino ba naman kami. Baka sabihin nila nag-iinarte kami.

Nicole: Sabi ko nga sa kanila na I will forever hold this memory in my heart na they actually considered us to have a multimedia career in ABS-CBN very thankful kami d'un.

Nicole: Sabi nga nila hope is eternal we're not closing our doors. Kami rin naman ni Chris eh siguro lang this is not the right time yet. Our heart is not ready.

Life is not about money and fame. There are more important things in life.

You've done a couple of endorsements such as Talk & Text, Diana Talder, Happy Fiesta Palm Oil, Ascof Lagundi and Knorr Sinigang Mix, how does it affect your career?

Nicole: Masaya! D'yan kami kumikita eh.

The bulk of our savings comes from the endorsements. Ngayon pa lang kami nagri-reap ng aming pinaghirapan for the past six years.

You're nominated in the 23rd Awit Awards for Best Novelty and Best Christmas Song for the singles Mahal Kita Kasi and Tuloy Pa Rin Ang Pasko respectively, what can you say about this?

Nicole: Flattered and overwhelming!

Chris: Nakakatuwa! We're very thankful talaga sobra sobra!

Pero to be nominated is enough reason for us to be proud. Dagdag bragging rights.

Chris: Two years ago binigyan kami ng awards for the being the People's Choice for the Most Outstanding Radio Djs and Events Hosts for 2008. 2009 naman Gawad Tanglaw Best DJ kami for 2009.

Nicole: Meron pa akong isang award Gandingan ng UP Best DJ. So hopefully this year ang makuha naman ay 'yung PMPC Star Awards atsaka Awit Awards.

Who are you now versus when you're just starting out?

Kulang pa sa gas at pangkain hanggang sa ang laki talaga ng change pero our hearts didn't change we're still the same old Nicole and Chris. We will never ever forget that moment how it all started. Mukha kaming kawawa.

(laughs) Ano ba yan?!!

Chris: Mukhang naawa sa amin kasi kami 'yung pinapagalitan eh. Muntik na kaming hindi makalabas ng buhay.

Nicole: So gan'un kami nagsimula. 'Yung tipong nag out of town kami hindi kami makakabalik kasi kailangan naming sumabay sa roro. That was before. And now si Chris Tsuper naman has finished his own house in Lucena and he has his brand new car na nagstart din sa manual na karag-karagkagin.

Nicole: Sa Camp Aguinaldo 'yun paglabas sa stage Chris Tsuper and Nicole Hyala buong auditorium pandemonium. Sana matupad ko siya this year. We believe ni Chris Tsuper na because we have good heart tsaka everyday 'yung influence namin na positibo sa tao has a good karma. And this now is the good karma. For six years namin sa tambalan nari-reap na namin siya. Nakakatawa talaga! :)

As DJs, your reaction with Executive Order 255 by P-Noy ordering FM stations to play at least four OPM songs every hour? Do you think this action would help revive the OPM scene?

Nicole: Sa amin no problem kasi...

Sinusuportahan talaga namin. And 'yung four songs in an hour matagala na siya eh.

What’s in store for you this year? Any shows or big time concerts coming up for this year?

Hindi namin plinaplano na kailangan this year ganito, ganyan.

Nicole: Lahat ng nangyari sa tambalan it came by chance and unplanned. Meron kaming campaign eh “Go for the Gold in 2010”
